Who I am
I walk alone through cities I don’t know, a Leica Q3 slung over my shoulder, with no itinerary. Based in Namur, Belgium.
I never plan a series in advance : it decides itself on the spot, at the first glance that stops me.
Black and white, or color
I work in both : color tells the place, black and white tells the person. The choice comes after, never before : I look at what the photo needs to say.
My most personal series pushes the idea all the way : it photographs photographers mid-strut, each image existing in both languages at once : the eye that watches, watched in turn.
I don’t take a photo to show a city. I take it to show what the city was doing to someone, for the space of a second.
Where I look
Namur first, out of loyalty. Then New York : I’ve gone back five times, and the series remade itself with every trip, never the same twice. Then Rotterdam for its geometry, Tokyo for its silent vertigo, and every city where a glance has ever stopped me.
What I’m not
I’m not the type to ask permission before photographing, nor the type to use that as an excuse to be dishonest. I get close, I take the shot, I move on : the street doesn’t replay itself.
I’m not in a hurry either. A series can wait months before I understand what it’s telling.
